MTC's new "Marmite" scope.

Okay boys and girls here we go. Rather than tell you how sexy the box is and what the packaging is like I will go straight to the things that you really want to read. Is this scope worth buying? and will I like it?

The outstanding feature of the Viper SL is that it has NO parallax error. Due to the 24mm objective and the short length of the scope your crosshairs will stay put no matter how much you move your head. You might get trampled in the rush as the HFT airgunners flock to their gun shops for this scope as it is almost perfect for target shooting. I took the scope out onto the range and fixed the crosshairs on a target 55 yards away and moved my head from side to side and the crosshairs stayed in exactly the same spot. Now that's what we want to see. The manufacturers state that it can focus down to ten yards but mine focused right down to seven yards and remained clear and there was ZERO parallax error at all distances.

Features include low level turrets and a really nice illuminated reticle which only lights up the centre of the scope. There is an extra turret which chooses the level of illumination but for all the hunters out there MTC have listened and the reticle switches on and off via an easy to reach push button which works well even if you are wearing heavy gloves, BLISS.

If you do intend to use it for hunting it does have a great field of view but because of the very low eye relief it does make it difficult to take those quicker shots and it also makes standing and kneeling shots very difficult due to trying to get your eye very close to the scope which can be a bit awkward.

Okay the very important bit. THe reticle on this scope is very fine and the occular which adjusts the focus of the crosshairs only goes to +2.0 to -2.0

What that means is that people who wear specs may not be able to see the reticle without their glasses on and there are lots of airgunners out there who do take their specs off to shoot. If you are thinking about buying this scope don't buy it online, Go try one at a gun shop or borrow one if you can, there is a very good chance you won't get on with the very fine reticle and the virtually zero eye relief so make sure you keep your money in your pocket until you check it out.

If you are a target shooter and can get used to the very unusual eye relief you will love this scope. In my opinion it might be the very best HFT scope on the market bar none. I like it so much I have even been practicing with my glasses on (I need them to see the reticle). This scope has now replaced one which was almost three times the price and is fantastic value for money for the target shooter. Would I use one for hunting? Nope, there are other scopes out there which are cheaper and easier to use when hunting. This one would do fine but when it comes to hunting "fine" isn't good enough, stay clear of it for hunting but if you can check that the eye relief and reticle suits you and if you are a target shooter you might want to make sure you are in the front of the queue at your local gun shop because no matter how much money you have you won't find anything better. RRP £249

TOP TIP.
DONT bother buying the MTC "connectamount" which is designed for this scope. I have thoroughly tested it with two sportsmatch mounts clamped onto the front of the scope. It looks a bit odd but it does not lose it's zero. The "Connectamounts" are expensive and are very high and if you use them for target shooting your new scope will sit too high above the barrel and makes those closer shots far more difficult.

Pros
NO Parallax Error
Great depth of field
Wide field of view
Lightweight
nice illuminated reticle
Cons
fine reticle which won't suit everyone
zero eye relief which makes it difficult for hunters
looks odd when mounted on ordinary mounts
